- 2026-01-15

Taipei, January 16, 2026. The Evergreen Symphony Orchestra announced today that Germany-based violinist Ting-shuo Chang has been appointed concertmaster of the ESO, where he will serve in rotation with an additional concertmaster still to be selected.
Ting-shuo Chang’s extensive international career spans Europe and Asia, where he has served as concertmaster of the Göttingen Symphony Orchestra in Germany, the Grafenegg Academy Orchestra in Austria, the Seiji Ozawa Music Academy in Japan, and the Weiwuying Contemporary Ensemble in Kaohsiung, as well as having played in the Verbier Festival Orchestra and the Gastaad Festival Orchestra. Mr. Chang maintains a strong commitment to contemporary music, where, through his work with the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra, he has cultivated versatile artistry that bridges classical tradition and contemporary innovation. In the area of education, Mr. Chang’s diverse international experiences include active involvement in family concerts in Germany, where music education is encouraged from an early age.

Graduating from the University of Music and Theatre Hamburg, Mr. Chang studied under Prof. Andreas Röhn who was the former concertmaster of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and earned both a master’s degree and the prestigious Konzertexamen (highest performance diploma) with distinction.
Speaking on behalf of the Evergreen Symphony Orchestra, Jim Chang, Board Director of the Orchestra’s parent organization—Chang Yung-fa Foundation, stated: “Nurturing young Taiwanese musicians on the international stage has long been our mission, strongly supported by our Artist-in-Residence Jaap van Zweden. In 2025 alone, the ESO hired more than ten outstanding musicians from Taiwan and abroad to serve as section principals and orchestra members across various sections. The appointment of Ting-shuo Chang as concertmaster further exemplifies this commitment.”

Ting-shuo Chang previously collaborated with Jaap van Zweden in Switzerland in 2021 at the Gstaad Festival Orchestra. Reflecting on that experience, he was deeply impressed by the maestro’s rigorous and precise rehearsal style. Chang reflected, “The maestro, himself a violinist by training, brings distinctive insights into string tone production and color. Together with the members of the Evergreen Symphony Orchestra, I very much look forward to working with Maestro van Zweden again and contributing to Taiwan’s music scene.”
