The Evergreen Symphony Orchestra (ESO) proudly presents “ESO 2025 - Jaap van Zweden & Kit Armstrong”, featuring two performances: Saturday, May 31st at 7:30 p.m., at the Miaobei Art Center Performance Hall, and Sunday, June 1st at 7:30 p.m., at the Taipei National Concert Hall. Led by Maestro Jaap van Zweden, ESO’s newly appointed Artist-in-Residence, and joined by internationally acclaimed pianist Kit Armstrong, this program is part of the ESO 2025 season - Maestro’s Selections concert series. It aims to bridge classical tradition with modern expression, balancing intellectual depth with profound emotion.

From the early classicism of Mozart to the expressive intensity of Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich in the 20th century, this concert offers a sweeping exploration of music across different eras, cultures, and human experiences. The program begins with Mozart’s Overture to Don Giovanni, a work of striking theatricality and dramatic tension, followed by Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, featuring the prodigious Kit Armstrong.

Renowned pianist Kit Armstrong will join the ESO as the featured soloist, performing Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

A distinguished pianist, composer and mathematician, Kit Armstrong has garnered international acclaim since the age of eight. Having studied under legendary pianist Alfred Brendel, he is renowned for his ability to blend intellectual precision with profound emotional depth. With his masterful technique and insightful interpretations, he will bring extraordinary artistry to Rachmaninoff’s variations. Audiences can anticipate truly unforgettable moments, particularly noting the very beautiful 18th variation filled with magic and lyricism.

The second half of the program features Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D minor, a work of immense emotional and historical significance. Composed during a period of political repression, this symphony reflects both the turmoil of its time and the resilience of the human spirit. The work juxtaposes grandeur with introspection, moving from its commanding opening to the triumphant yet enigmatic finale. The brass and percussion drive a climactic resolution that has often been interpreted as both a declaration of endurance and an ironic portrayal of forced optimism.
